Sylvia Rivera: A Trailblazer for Intersectional Activism

Welcome back to our LGBTQ+ History Month series! Today, we shine a light on an incredible activist whose legacy continues to inspire us all—Sylvia Rivera. 

Sylvia was a fierce transgender activist and a close ally of Masha P. Johnson. Together, they co-founded the street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a vital organization that provided support and resources for homeless transgender youth. Their work was rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a safe space to thrive, and Sylvia dedicated her life to creating those spaces. 

What sets Sylvia apart is her unwavering commitment to fighting for the most marginalized in our community. She was not afraid to speak out against the mainstream movement that often overlooked transgender people, people of color, and those experiencing homelessness.
